Building Your Home Health Kit

The foundation of your health is your diet and lifestyle. These supplies support rest, recovery, and observation when illness strikes — know what to keep on hand, how to use it, and when.

Essential Supplies for SARS CoronaVirus, COVID-19, Flu, and Other Infectious Diseases

The information on this page is intended to help you learn about items that you can keep at home that may be able to help you observe and recover from infectious disease. Some items will help you monitor your body with objective readings and others will require you to learn how to better understand how your body responds to their use. As you gain experience and knowledge, you will have a better understanding about which items may better suit you and your loved ones.

Remember that the foundation of your health is your diet and lifestyle. Anytime you suspect that you may become ill or are ill, it is wise to make sure that your diet and lifestyle will support your recovery. Rest, good food, love, and good nutrition will help give you a solid foundation upon which you can recover.

I have included affiliate links to Amazon, so that you can order most of the items directly from them and have them shipped directly to your home. There are other items that are best purchased through my Fullscript site, where I can offer better quality products and pricing than what is available on Amazon.

Observe Your Baseline

Temperature

Thermometer — $7

Tracks fever as the body’s natural infection response.

To measure your body temperature for spikes in fever. Research indicates that fever is one of the primary ways that your body fights infection. Follow your doctor’s guidelines on when to seek care. Fever above 107°F is associated with brain damage. Your body will naturally limit fevers to 105°F — they will not tend to go higher than that unless you restrict your body’s ability to radiate heat with jackets, blankets, sweaters, etc.

Oxygen Saturation

Pulse Oximeter — $21

Measures oxygen saturation; best to have on hand if you’re concerned about pneumonia.

This device will help you measure the oxygen saturation of your body, to help determine if you’re at risk of pneumonia that may require urgent attention. Pneumonia can decrease oxygen saturation of the body, creating a fuel issue. If your oxygen saturation is below 94%, contact your doctor or nurse hotline for advisement. If it’s below 92% and you have difficulty getting a full breath, it’s time to go to urgent care, or potentially the emergency department. Monitoring your oxygen saturation regularly when you feel sick is a good idea to make sure it doesn’t progress into a serious condition — research from 7 Emergency Departments in Canada supports using this threshold for getting help at the hospital. It’s always best to consult your doctor for their guidelines; you can even ask at a well-patient visit and write the number they recommend on your pulse oximeter with a marker, so you don’t have to remember it.

Blood Pressure

Blood Pressure Monitor — $23

Blood pressure will change during times of stress, such as illness. It is important to know your baseline reading, just like your temperature and oxygen saturation.

Knowing your baseline will help you better understand how it changes when you are unwell.

For example, when someone visits their doctor and their blood pressure reading is below 110/70, they are often told that they must be an athlete and praised for the reading. Granted, there may be some people who are athletes where this has an impact — however, there is another important consideration. Low “normal” blood sugar (one of the two primary fuels of the body) will result in low “normal” blood pressure. This may be one of the first signs that the body is under consistent stress for a prolonged period of time, and may warrant a different recommendation rather than praise.

Blood pressure may increase or decrease for an individual when they are unwell, so it is important to know YOUR baseline. If your blood pressure elevates over 140/90 and continues to increase, it may be wise to contact urgent care or your nurse help line for guidance — especially if you are unable to decrease the blood pressure with relaxation exercises (deep breathing, rest, meditation, prayer, etc.).

Support Your Recovery

Tools

Austin Air Purifier — $855

Reduces airborne particles and infectious agents — a passive, always-on intervention rather than something you use only when sick.

Air purifiers can reduce infectious particles in the air. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly for your health, they can reduce overall particulate matter in your environment — this may reduce cardiovascular disease and hypertension by up to 16%, depending on your air quality. If you exercise at home, an air purifier is essential to create a healthier workout environment. In short, air pollution (increased particulate matter) is a risk factor associated with increased severity and negative outcomes for infections.

Nebulizer — $40

A device for inhaling fine-mist solutions directly into the lungs; best to have on hand if you’re concerned about pneumonia.

This device can be used to help support upper respiratory stress. There are three ways I use it personally:
  • Nebulizing salt water — ¼ tsp Premier Pink Salt with 4–6 oz distilled water. Add 5 ml to the nebulizer cup and store the rest for later use. For a dry, scratchy throat.[1][2]
  • Nebulizing glutathione — 1 capsule of TheraNaturals Reduced Glutathione with 5 ml distilled water. At the start of any viral or bacterial infection.[3][4]
  • Nebulizing food-grade hydrogen peroxide — 3–5 drops of 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide (DO NOT use the stabilized kind from most stores) to 5 ml distilled water (~.1% solution). During any viral or bacterial infection.[5]
I continue to use them as desired, based on improvement — practice is how you gain the knowledge and experience to know what works best for you over time.

Nasal Rinse

Neti Pot — $30

Rinse for upper respiratory support at the onset of illness.

Neti pots can help support the body at the onset of upper respiratory stress such as infection (this type of rinse may cause discomfort if your nose is already chaffed from wiping). Two options to consider:
  • Salt water, baking soda & distilled water — to make 60 doses, combine ½ cup Premier Pink Salt (or Fine Ground Celtic Sea Salt) with 3 tbsp baking soda, ground fine in a mortar and pestle. Use about ¼ tsp per 8 oz warm distilled water (check the temperature first). At the first suspicion of getting sick, and during the first 1–2 days of symptoms.
  • Food-grade hydrogen peroxide & distilled water — dilute 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide (DO NOT use the stabilized kind from most stores) to a 0.5% solution: about 1 oz peroxide per 6 oz distilled water. On the first day or two of being sick.

Olive Leaf Extract

Upper respiratory support.

How: 1–3 capsules, 2–3 times daily, or 10–30 drops of extract (depending on concentration) in a small amount of water, 2–3 times daily. When: With suspected viral infection.

Organic Oregano Oil

A potent infection fighter — use sparingly.

How: 1 drop in a small amount of water, then immediately chase with 6–8 oz water. This stuff is potent — the chaser helps with the burning sensation it leaves in the mouth and throat. May also be diluted — ¼ tsp olive oil to 1 drop oregano oil — for internal or external use (e.g. plantar warts); this dilution may still burn. When: With viral or bacterial infections.

Mineral 950 Mineral Support

Aids the body’s fever response.

A broad-based mineral supplement helps support the body during infection, since fighting infection requires many of the body’s resources. When: With fevers, especially low-grade fevers (100–101°F) that go up and down but aren’t going away.

Vitamin D3/K2

Maintains the body’s protective barriers.

Routine testing of your Vitamin D levels is the best way to maintain adequate amounts. Vitamin D works like a hormone to help your body maintain its protective barriers, which help prevent infection. Strategy: Consider increasing your dosage when you’re around sick people.

Calcium

Helps prevent viral attachment.

It’s difficult for a virus to take hold in tissues with a rich calcium supply. Strategy: Keep intake adequate year-round via calcium-rich foods or supplements, increasing when you’re around sick people.

Vitamin C (Camu Camu Powder, 8oz) — $14

A whole-food source of vitamin C.

Camu Camu powder is tart in taste but packed with vitamin C — try adding small amounts to a smoothie to hide the flavor. Vitamin C is used by the body to help the immune system kill viruses and bacteria and to support mucosal barrier function. How: 500mg equivalent every other day for general support, or 1000mg per day if you suspect you’re getting under the weather. Start small — it can irritate the mouth (canker sores) and for some may cause slight diarrhea.

Manuka Honey

Antimicrobial support for coughs.

Honey is one of the most effective forms of therapy for coughs, and Manuka Honey’s antimicrobial properties are more potent and regulated. How: 1 tsp Manuka Honey stirred into 6–8 oz warm water at 104°F. Sip and heal. When: For any cough or to support the body with any infection.

Colloidal Silver (2oz)

For short-term use only.

How: Adults, ¼ tsp; children under 78 lbs, ⅛ tsp — for up to 14 days, diluted with water if you prefer. Not intended for continuous use — long-term use may cause a blue/grey tinting of the skin (argyria) from silver buildup in the body.

Retention Enemas

Retention enemas allow for re-absorption of fluids in the large intestine — depending on the fluid used, this therapy can be used to help manage many symptoms.

How I choose what to use for a retention enema

  • Sea salt water — useful during certain infections or to help balance intestinal microflora; can also help hydrate the body and support temperature regulation during a fever.
  • Organic coffee — limited research suggests it stimulates the biliary system (liver and gallbladder) to release its contents into the small intestine, theorized to improve the liver’s capacity for biotransformation (how it neutralizes harmful substances), as well as support blood sugar regulation, hormone metabolism, neurotransmitter processing, and blood composition. It may also help with certain infections or intestinal microflora balance, along with hydration, comfort, and fever support. My preferred coffee is S.A. Wilson, with Cafe Mam as a good alternative.
  • Organic bone broth (beef, chicken, or vegetable stock also work) — most useful when keeping food down isn’t possible, or there’s concern about dehydration from vomiting or similar losses; this allows for both hydration and electrolyte replenishment.

How I choose what to add to a retention enema

  • Diluted food-grade essential oils — small amounts of the right oil at the right time can meaningfully support the body’s recovery across a range of symptoms.
  • Glutathione — small amounts added to the enema allow for local use and may improve absorption, since oral glutathione tends to break down during digestion; bypassing the upper digestive tract (via enema or nebulizer) may help.
  • Vitamins & minerals — small amounts of clean supplements (zero excipients) can offer meaningful support for many conditions, especially when the body’s need for a given nutrient increases.
  • Probiotics — small amounts of a quality, additive-free probiotic can help reinoculate the large intestine’s microflora, supporting digestion, immunity, and cellular energy production.
