A devoted husband and father, and a passionate advocate for getting to the root cause of chronic illness.
I’m a devoted husband and father, and a passionate advocate for health and wellness. I hold a Doctorate in Chiropractic and a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles. Over the years, I’ve invested thousands of hours in postgraduate study and research into how the human body works on the inside, and how that shows up on the outside. That education is what directly inspired The Path To Health, presented both in my manual and through the educational videos in the self-help section of this site.
For a long time, I noticed that many of my patients weren’t getting the care they needed through conventional medicine, and weren’t getting the results they wanted. While I was in graduate school, I was also learning how my profession — chiropractic — fit into the larger healthcare system. I started practice in 2003, focusing at first on musculoskeletal conditions. My postgraduate training let me diagnose those issues well and help patients see how they connected directly to their lifestyle and diet.
Within a few years, I noticed a bigger pattern: most health conditions — well beyond musculoskeletal problems, including thyroid disorders, diabetes, migraines, autoimmune conditions, infertility, ADD/ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and many other chronic illnesses — had clear ties back to diet and lifestyle.
I saw a real problem in how we’re taught about medicine. We’ve been conditioned to believe that poor health as we age is just a result of aging, bad genes, or bad luck. But there’s a bigger issue: my own medical training taught practitioners and patients alike that you can medicate or supplement your way out of poor health.
We cannot simply medicate or supplement our way out of poor health.
In my own practice, patients blamed me when they couldn’t recover from chronic conditions, and it troubled me deeply. When I really thought about it, I realized they were right to be frustrated. I hadn’t given them the highest level of care, because like most physicians, I’d been trained to look at the body as separate systems, without ever being taught how to put those systems back together as a whole.
So I set out to learn how the body’s systems are truly interconnected, and how they work together when we’re healthy. That deeper understanding let me start helping patients whose conditions weren’t severe enough, or symptomatic in the right way, to be treated with medication or surgery alone. I realized that millions of people were suffering simply because they’d fallen through the cracks of a medical system that taught them their health problems were out of their control.
In 2008, I opened a new office in Upland, California, and shifted my focus toward helping patients connect their symptoms to the root issues behind how they’d been managing their health. Between my clinical experience and my training in functional medicine, I made an important discovery: most of the symptoms people experience can be resolved through the right changes to diet and lifestyle. I also saw how much confusion patients were dealing with, thanks to conflicting information from doctors, advertisements, media, and other sources. My reason for writing The Path To Health was simple: to create a short, accessible guide that helps people understand how to properly care for their bodies, so they can take control of their own health.
